Tip of the Week

Make sure your photos are 300 dpi or better. What does that mean?

It means DON’T pull your photos off your website. Use the original photos from your digital camera, or scan color prints at the highest resolution your scanner will allow.

Warning: Low-Resolution Images Don't Print Well!

Many images, particularly 72dpi jpegs taken off the Internet, look jagged and blurry when printed on paper, especially glossy stock. Those images have already been reduced in resolution so they load fast on the internet, and you can’t go backwards to make a low resolution file into high resolution. You need to start with a high resolution file. For best results, we recommend that your images be at least 300dpi (dots per inch). The best thing to do is send us the original images from your digital camera.

To get good images from your digital camera, use the highest quality setting available on the camera.

SEO Science Fair Projects

Coming up with interesting science fair projects, especially middle school science fair projects and high school science fair projects, seems to be the most difficult step for most students. You can find lots of science projects on the net, but you will not find this one because I did a google search. There are so many science experiments you can create with this science fair idea. So let's get going...

Science Fair Category: Computer Science
Science Fair Projects Topic: Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Hypothesis: Reciprocal article exchange amongst websites will increase a site's position on Google.

Procedure:

  • Choose your favorite topic.

  • If you do not have a google tool bar on your computer, download the free google toolbar here.

  • In the “search web” window type in your subject. Make it specific by using a 3 or more keyword search term,
i.e. “ physics science fair projects” without the quotes.

  • Write a list of the sites that are listed #2 through 25, making sure that you document their position with the date of entry.
    Date    Position    Site
    8/4/05    2          www.all-science-fair-projects.com
                  3          www.super-science-fair-projects.com

A website’s position can change daily, so try to make your list in one setting. The more sites on the list the better. If you can collect 100 or more sites then that would be a large sampling for your scientific method for kids research project.

  • After your list is made, click on the #2 position site. Look for the contact email address. The link to the email address is usually in the menu at the very top of the page or at the very bottom of the page. Write an email to the webmaster introducing your self.

Example: you can use this template and send it to all the webmasters:

Hi, my name is (first name) and I am a (grade) student at ________ school. I am doing a science fair project to find out if reciprocal article exchange will positively affect a website’s position on google.

I know I am asking a lot of you, but in the end I really believe that your position on Google will improve dramatically.

Would you be interested in contributing to my science fair project and research findings? If so, here are the guidelines:

I will supply the names, emails and website addresses of the people who have agreed to participate. Then you can contact them and exchange articles. Each web master will agree to place 10 or more unique articles on their site that will have relevant content to their site. There are specific guidelines as to how many links you will have in each article to your site. The articles will need to be posted by (date) due to my school deadline.

Aren't you excited about participating? Would love to have you on my team.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

    (Your first name)

PS: If you know anyone else who may want to participate, will you please forward this email to them?

To participate copy and paste the following agreement into your email.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    I, _________________________________________________________________,

am owner of the site ___________________________________________________,
agree to participant in (your name)’s science fair project on SEO positioning through reciprocal article exchange. I agree to allow (your name) to send out my name and email address to other web owners who have agreed to participant in this research project. In the footer of home page (see below*) I agree to put a link to a call-out page (see below**) where the articles will be listed with a short description. The link says, “articles” without the quotes. In the articles I write and send out I agree to put between 7 to 13 links to different pages on my site, within the content of my article. In addition I will put a link to my home page in the first line of the article and in the last line of the article. All my reciprocal articles that I exchange will be original and are not anywhere else on the web. They will be sent out to web owners by (date).

    Signature:____________________________________________________________

    Date:________________________________________________________________

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    * Look at the bottom of Super Science Fair Projects home page to see what a footer looks like.

** Here is a call out page for articles: http://www.super-science-fair-projects.com/articles.html
The Wedding Favors article is an example of the model to follow. The article comes from Brad Fallon, one of the top SEO experts on the net.

In the subject heading of your email write either Reciprocal Linking Question, I need your help for my science fair projects, or Question or Help. See what gets you the most response.

  • While you are waiting for the emails to be returned to you, do your background research on the net. If you want a detailed guide on how to do a science fair project look at the Super Science Fair Projects ebook.

  • A week after the deadline that you gave the participants to post the articles, input your exact search term into the google search web window. Next to the web sites, write down their position on google.

  • Next you will need to gather your data, write your kids science fair projects report, and science fair abstracts report and make your middle school, high school or elementary science fair projects display board.

  • As a courtesy, I would suggest sending your abstract to the participants with a thank you note.
